This idea occupied most of Durdle Games drive home from GenCon in 2021, and after being put on the back burner for a bit (cooking pun #1), it is now much closer to being pulled from the oven (cooking pun #2 and more to come!) Now we say ‘much closer’ because it is indeed not fully ready to pitch to a publisher. Not ‘fully baked” if you will (#3, I AM ON FIRE). So, in this post we’re going to share some of the interesting core mechanisms of this bake-off, playoff game.
#1 Bracket Based Betting
Championchip Cookie is based on the tournament bracket structure. In this case eight grandma’s will enter the baking competition, but after 3 rounds only one grandma will be declared the ultimate winner. This structure opens up the opportunity for a fun bit of game play- The Long Bet. In CC you’ll have the opportunity to throw your lot in with your favorite grandma early in the game and then follow her to the final round. The more rounds she advances the more payouts you’ll get at the end of the game. That structure also leads to the next fun mechanism….
#2 Influencing the Match Up’s
Betting on things is fun. People bet on horse races, singing competitions, even the color of the Gatorade that will be dumped on the Super Bowl winning coaches head (yes, that’s real). But you know what’s also fun? Juicing your athlete for higher performance! In CC in addition to placing bets on the grandmas, you’ll also be able to throw “support chips” at grandmas. The chips directly influence which grandma will win the match up and how many points that grandma pays out for the round. This grants the players the opportunity to push their preferred grandma into later rounds and earn better payouts on their long bets. Now if that sounds like fun, you know what sounds like even more fun? How about a little…
#3 Sabotage
You know the one thing that can ruin a perfectly good chocolate chip cookie? A raisin. If you disagree you can fight Jason! Every player will start the game with a single “raisin” card. This card is played like a bet card, but when revealed actually reduces the support chips value on that grandma. This lets players do a couple things at once. They get a bet on that grandma- raisins still count as bets. They reduce that grandmas chance for winning. Players throw off their opponents as to whom they are actually supporting in the match up. It’s a delightfully evil little mechanic.
There is honestly a lot more to ChampionChip Cookie but at this point very few elements of the game are sacred. We are still play testing and revising after every game, sometimes very big revisions. For now, no sell sheets or rulebook will be made available. However if you see us in person we will certainly have the latest version of the game on hand. Ask for a game and we can all dive into the high stakes world of competitive grandma cookie baking together!
