Whoa! Where did the summer go? It seems like just yesterday we were holding our first annual Durdle-summit to plan our Durdle-operations for the coming Durdle-year. Now the Durdle-year is half done and we are frantically flailing our designer arms like Kermit the frog as we race to the finish that is GenCon. What does the coming GenCon look like for your favorite anthropomorphic turtle and hare designer duo?
- The Big Opener
The first thing we want to do at GenCon is spend some time with our play testers. They submit their sanity to our untested designs all year long and we wanted to meet up with them for a casual night of gaming and merriment. Also, congratulations, if you are reading this blog you are invited to the event! (Jokes on you! I know nobody reads this blog!) If you do decide to join us you’ll get to play all the Durdle games in person and possibly try some new ideas we have been working on behind the scenes. These ideas WILL. BE. BAD., but after our Durdlers play them, they will be better. That’s how design works.
- A GenCon to Amaze
We are very much looking forward to seeing a physical copy of Unmatched Adventures: Tales to Amaze for the very first time. We don’t know if it will be a retail copy or a publisher proof, but either way it will be the first time we will have gotten our grubby little paws on the physical manifestation of UMA. This GenCon we will be guests of Restoration games and spending some of our time at the Restoration booth. As we aren’t really qualified for much of anything except playing Unmatched Adventures that’s what we will be doing during vendor hall hours. (Restoration Booth #1635) If you want to see UMA in action, stop by the booth and get a demo from one of us. Also tell us what your favorite cryptid is and Darren will tell you why you are wrong and why it should be the Loveland Frogman.
- Getting Down to Business
While GenCon is a lot of fun, it is also a working trip for Durdle Games. Our previous convention, Origins, was a successful trip for us with regards to getting our games in front of publishers. We currently have 2 of our games being evaluated by 3 publishers, so GenCon will feature some follow up meetings in that regard. We also have a few fresh meetings lined up with publishers. Trick City and Rolling Acres will be getting their first publisher pitches. And finally, we were accepted to a designer/publisher/artist social event where we hope to make a lot more connections. This is the business side of making games and is very much part of doing the work to get your ideas onto shelves and into the hands of gamers someday. So, if you see us sprinting through the ICC that either means Slapfish is about to close, or we are running late to a publisher meeting.
GenCon is always a whirlwind. If we see you, we will probably stop you to say hello. And if you see us stop us and say hello. Gently though please. We startle easily and are prone to bolting.
